What happens if the test centre cancels your IELTS test?

You choose between a refund and a new date. ielts.org says that if circumstances outside the centre's control, such as extreme weather, natural disaster, civil unrest, industrial action or a pandemic, force a cancellation, the centre gives as much notice as possible and offers a full refund or a transfer, whichever you prefer. Technical failures and venue problems also bring a choice of refund or transfer.

The global rule

From ielts.org's cancellations, refunds, remarks and transfers page, which applies to tests at official centres worldwide (UKVI and US tests have their own terms).

Why the test is cancelledWhat you are offered
Extreme weather, natural disaster, civil unrest, industrial action, pandemic, force majeureFull refund or transfer to a future date, your choice
Technical failure, venue or environmental factorsA refund or a transfer to a future test
You cancelRefund depends on timing and local policy

If a problem happens during your test

If something on the day affects your performance, such as noise, a fault or the way the test is run, tell the invigilator on the day. IDP's terms say complaints about test delivery must be submitted to the centre before you leave on test day and will not be accepted afterwards (IDP terms).

For IELTS Online, a brief internet drop is made up with extra time equal to the time lost; if you lose the connection for a long time and need to retake, your test partner (British Council or IDP) arranges it (ielts.org).

Local consumer law

ielts.org says that if consumer protection law where you registered gives you better cancellation or transfer rights than its policy or the centre's guidance, local law applies (ielts.org). Detailed rules are set locally and can differ by country and test centre, so check your booking confirmation or ask your centre if anything here does not match what you were told.
