ESL courses and the writing and speaking scores

The page says that starting Summer 2026, all new students educated outside the US must complete ESL 203 (undergraduate) or ESL 5203 (graduate), Academic Writing and Research Skills, in the first block of their first semester. This applies when no transferable college credit from an accredited US institution is submitted. Students found exempt at admission skip it, and a student who does not enrol is blocked from registering for later semesters without approval.

Placement also uses section scores. For writing, IELTS 5.5 or lower means ESL 101 and 203, 6.0 means ESL 203 only, and 6.5 or higher waives both. Speaking follows the same pattern for ESL 102 and 204, with IELTS 6.5 or higher waiving them. PTE Academic writing 75 and speaking 55 waive the same courses.

What it means for your plan

A 5.5 gets you admitted but may add ESL courses, so a higher writing score saves time and tuition on credits that do not count toward your degree. Undergraduates also sit placement assessments for maths, and for English too if exempt from ESL.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Wilmington programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Wilmington University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
