Band 8 model answer

Band 8270 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I'd like to talk about an ergonomic memory foam pillow that I rely on every single night to get a decent night's sleep. Appearance-wise, it's quite distinctive compared to a standard feathery pillow. It has a contoured wave shape, with a gentle dip in the middle to cradle your head and slightly raised ridges on either side to support your neck. It comes with an off-white, breathable bamboo cover that feels wonderfully soft and cool against your skin.

I bought it about eighteen months ago from a local homeware shop in my town centre. At the time, I'd been waking up with terrible stiffness in my neck and shoulders, mostly because I spend hours sitting at a desk looking at a monitor for work. A colleague recommended trying an orthopaedic pillow, so over the weekend, I decided to invest in a proper one.

I use it every single night without fail. In fact, I've become so accustomed to it that if I go away on holiday or visit family for a few days, I usually try to squeeze it into my boot or luggage because regular hotel pillows just don't give me the same level of comfort.

The main reason it helps me unwind is the way it relieves physical pressure. The moment I lie down, the dense foam slowly adapts to the contours of my neck and aligns my spine properly. To be honest, it creates an immediate sense of weightlessness. Sinking into it has basically become a psychological cue for my brain that the working day is over and it's time to switch off and drift off peacefully.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe a comfortable pillow or cushion"?+

Jot down key features: memory foam, contoured wave shape, bamboo cover

How long should my answer be?+

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Can I use this model answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
