A couple of years ago, for my thirtieth birthday, my younger sister Clara surprised me with a vintage leather-bound journal. She knew I had been struggling with a bit of a creative block at the time, and she thought having a physical space to jot down my thoughts might help me find my inspiration again. It is truly a beautiful piece of craftsmanship; the cover is a rich, dark mahogany colour, made from distressed leather that feels incredibly soft to the touch. It has these thick, cream-coloured parchment pages that have a lovely, earthy scent, and it is fastened with a sturdy brass latch. I use it almost every single day, mostly as a commonplace book where I store fleeting ideas, sketches, or even just reflections on my day. It sits permanently on my bedside table, becoming a ritualistic part of my morning routine. This gift is profoundly important to me, not just because of the quality of the item, but because of the sentiment behind it. Clara gave it to me during a period when I felt quite overwhelmed by work, and her gesture showed that she really understood what I needed, even when I had not articulated it myself. Having this tangible object to hold onto has turned writing into a sensory experience rather than just a task. Every time I open it, I am reminded that someone close to me prioritises my personal growth and well-being, which makes it far more valuable to me than any expensive electronic gadget or luxury item I have ever owned.
