I would like to talk about my hybrid bicycle, which I bought about three years ago from a local independent bike shop. It has a charcoal grey frame with fairly thick, puncture-resistant tyres, flat handlebars, and a sturdy pannier rack over the rear wheel. It is not particularly flashy, but it was designed to handle both bumpy canal paths and smooth city roads without any fuss.

I originally picked it up when I moved into a new flat that was just a bit too far to walk comfortably to my office every morning. Since then, I have used it almost every single day. On weekdays, I cycle roughly five kilometres each way for my daily commute, rain or shine. At the weekends, I often take it out for longer recreational rides along the river or through nearby parks, simply to get some fresh air and clear my head.

What makes it so indispensable is really its sheer reliability. Public transport in my city can be pretty temperamental, with frequent delays and crowded buses, so having my own set of wheels gives me total independence. I never get stuck in rush-hour traffic jams, and I know precisely how long my journey will take door-to-door.

On top of that, it has done wonders for my overall fitness. I spend most of my working hours sitting at a desk, so getting forty minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise baked into my daily routine has made a huge difference to my stamina and energy levels. It is definitely one of the best practical purchases I have ever made.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe a reliable bicycle that you use regularly"?+

Note the bike type and key features (hybrid, pannier rack, puncture-resistant tyres).

How long should my answer be?+

Speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

Can I use this model answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
