About eighteen months ago, I had the chance to attend a large sustainable technology expo held at a major exhibition centre in Birmingham. At the time, I'd just started working as a junior project coordinator for a green energy consultancy, so my manager suggested I go along to get a feel for the wider industry.

The venue was absolutely massive, packed with hundreds of stalls ranging from multinational solar panel manufacturers to tiny startups showcasing biodegradable packaging. There was a real buzz about the place, with interactive product demonstrations, panel discussions, and people pitching new concepts on every corner. I spent the first morning wandering around the main hall, picking up brochures, and listening to a fascinating keynote talk about cutting-edge battery storage systems.

After lunch, I focused on networking, which was a bit daunting at first to be honest. However, I managed to break the ice with several component suppliers and even had a lengthy chat with a senior director from a firm we'd been trying to partner with for months. We exchanged business cards, and I made sure to touch base with her as soon as I got back to the office.

All in all, attending the fair was a major turning point for my professional development. It didn't just broaden my horizons regarding where the green tech sector is heading; it also gave me a huge confidence boost. Securing that supplier connection actually led to a lucrative contract for my team, which definitely raised my profile in the company and helped me secure a promotion earlier this year.
