Chocolate: questions and Band 8 answers

The examiner asks three to five short questions on two or three everyday topics in the first four to five minutes. These are the 8 questions about chocolate in the BandLadder test bank, with sample answers for the most frequent ones. Aim for two or three sentences each: answer, reason, one detail.

Did you like chocolate when you were a child?

I absolutely adored it back then. My grandmother used to keep a hidden stash of milk chocolate bars in her kitchen cupboard, and I would always manage to sneak a piece whenever I visited her house.

Did you often eat chocolate when you were a kid?

It was definitely a frequent treat for me. My parents were quite strict about sugar, but I usually managed to get my hands on a chocolate bar after school at least a few times a week.

How often do you eat chocolate?

These days, I tend to indulge only occasionally. I find that if I keep it in the house, I end up finishing the whole block in one sitting, so I prefer to buy it as a rare reward.

What's your favorite flavor?

Dark chocolate with sea salt is my absolute favourite. I love the contrast between the intense bitterness of the high cocoa content and the subtle savoury crunch of the salt flakes; it is incredibly sophisticated.

Do you like food made from chocolate?

I am a huge fan of chocolate-based desserts. A warm chocolate fondant with a gooey, molten centre is hard to beat, especially when it is served with a scoop of fresh vanilla bean ice cream.

Why do you think chocolate is popular around the world?

It probably has to do with the chemical reaction it triggers in the brain. It provides an instant mood boost and comfort, making it a universal go-to snack for people regardless of their cultural background.

Useful vocabulary

stash: a secret store of something valuable or hidden
indulge: to allow oneself to enjoy a particular pleasure
molten: liquefied by heat to a very high temperature
go-to: a reliable person or thing that is chosen
sophisticated: having a refined, complex, or highly developed taste
in one sitting: during a single, continuous period of activity

Use personal anecdotes to make your answers more engaging and natural.
Avoid one-word answers; always provide a brief reason or example.
