1

Do you know how to sew?

Just the basics, really. I can sew on a loose button or stitch up a small tear in a hem, but anything more complicated is beyond me. My grandmother tried to teach me with a needle and thread when I was younger, but I never quite got the hang of it.

2

Did you learn sewing when you were at school?

Yes, we had textile classes in secondary school for a couple of terms. We had to use a proper sewing machine to make simple items like cushion covers and tote bags. I wasn't particularly good at it, to be honest, but it was quite fun experimenting with fabrics.

3

Do you ever mend your own clothes?

Occasionally, yes. If a favourite jumper gets a tiny hole or a pair of trousers needs taking up, I'll definitely give it a go rather than throwing them away. It saves a bit of money and keeps my wardrobe going a bit longer.

4

What kind of things would you like to make by hand?

I'd love to be able to tailor my own shirts or jackets so they fit perfectly. Off-the-rack clothes rarely fit my shoulders quite right, so having the skill to alter them or even craft a bespoke garment from scratch would be brilliant.

5

Do you think sewing is still a useful skill nowadays?

Definitely. Even though fast fashion is everywhere, being able to repair things is far more sustainable. Plus, with people trying to reduce waste and be more eco-friendly, knowing how to alter or patch up an old garment is really practical.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.
