Band 8 sample answer
The bar chart illustrates the distribution of four distinct drinking habits across six age brackets in the United States. Overall, it is evident that the majority of the population identifies as heavy drinkers, particularly among younger cohorts, whereas light drinking is most prominent in the oldest age group.
Heavy drinkers constitute the largest segment in every category, peaking at 62% for those aged 16-24. While this proportion fluctuates, it generally trends downwards as age increases, reaching a low of 43% among individuals aged 65-74. Conversely, the proportion of light drinkers starts at a mere 8% for the youngest group and remains low until age 55, after which it rises sharply to 41% for the 65-74 age bracket.
Regarding ex-drinkers, the highest percentage is observed in the 25-34 age group at 33%, before gradually declining to 11% for the oldest cohort. Finally, the never-drinker category remains relatively small throughout, peaking at 15% for the 45-54 age group. In summary, while heavy drinking is the dominant habit across the US, there is a clear shift towards light drinking as people age.
