Band 8 sample answer
The two pie charts illustrate the distribution of employment across six different categories for men and women in Great Britain during 1992. Overall, it is evident that while managerial and professional positions represented the largest share of employment for both genders, there were stark differences in the distribution of manual and non-manual labour.
Regarding non-manual employment, managerial and professional roles accounted for 36% of male jobs and 29% of female jobs. A notable disparity exists in clerical and related work, which employed 31% of women but only 6% of men. Similarly, other non-manual roles comprised 9% of female employment compared to 6% for males. Consequently, women were much more heavily concentrated in non-manual sectors than their male counterparts.
In terms of manual labour, the patterns were distinct. Craft or similar roles were a major source of employment for men at 24%, whereas this category accounted for only 3% of female jobs. Other manual work was relatively similar, representing 27% for women and 26% for men. Finally, general labourers made up a marginal proportion of the workforce for both, at 1% for females and 2% for males, highlighting that manual labour was a more significant component of the male workforce overall.
