Band 8 sample answer
The provided charts illustrate the global distribution of coffee production and consumption, alongside the breakdown of profit margins across different industry roles. Overall, it is evident that production is concentrated in South America, whereas consumption is highest in Central America. Furthermore, the financial rewards are heavily skewed towards shipping and selling rather than production.
Regarding production, South America accounts for the largest share at 44%, followed by Africa at 19%, Asia at 18%, and Central America at 17%. Oceania contributes a negligible 2%. In contrast, consumption patterns differ significantly; Central America consumes the majority of coffee at 55%, with Asia following at 27%. South America and Japan account for smaller portions, at 11% and 7% respectively.
In terms of profit, the distribution is uneven. The shipping sector commands the highest profit share at 55%, followed by the seller at 27%. Conversely, the producer and the explorer receive significantly smaller portions of the total profit, at 11% and 7% respectively. This highlights a disparity where the primary producers and explorers gain the least financial benefit compared to those involved in the logistics and retail stages of the coffee supply chain.
