The process of steam generation in a gas-cooled nuclear reactor
The diagram below shows the production of steam using a gas-cooled nuclear reactor.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
- 1.Uranium fuel elements in the reactor core generate heat
- 2.Graphite moderators and boron control rods regulate the nuclear reaction
- 3.A gas blower circulates gas through the reactor to absorb heat
- 4.Hot gas travels through a duct to the heat exchanger
- 5.Heat is transferred from the gas to water in the heat exchanger
- 6.Water is converted into steam and sent to a turbo-alternator
- 7.Cooled gas is returned to the reactor to repeat the cycle

Band 8 sample answer
The provided diagram illustrates the operational mechanism of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, detailing how nuclear energy is converted into steam for electricity production. The system functions as a continuous cycle involving the reactor core, a heat exchanger, and various circulation components.
At the heart of the process is the reactor, which is encased in concrete radiation shielding and a pressure vessel. Inside, uranium fuel elements are positioned alongside graphite moderators and boron control rods, which manage the nuclear reaction. As the fuel elements generate heat, a gas blower forces gas through the reactor core. This gas absorbs the thermal energy and is subsequently transported via a hot gas duct to the heat exchanger.
Within the heat exchanger, the hot gas flows through a coiled pipe system, transferring its heat to incoming water. This interaction causes the water to vaporise into steam, which is then directed towards a turbo-alternator. Meanwhile, the gas, having lost its heat, is cooled and recirculated back into the reactor by the gas blower. The entire system is supported by charge tubes for loading fuel elements, ensuring the reactor remains functional for sustained energy production.

How to write about process diagrams
- Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends.
- Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally.
- Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
- illustrates
- shows or explains something using a visual aid
- mechanism
- a system of parts working together in operation
- subsequently
- happening after something else in a sequence
- transferred
- moved from one place or medium to another
- vaporise
- to turn from a liquid into a gas
- sustained
- continued for an extended period without interruption

Frequently asked questions
What should the overview say?
The process is a closed-loop system where heat generated by nuclear fission is transferred to water via a circulating gas to produce steam for power generation.
How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?
At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.
How do I describe process diagrams?
Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
