Should healthcare be free for all: discuss both views

The debate regarding the funding of medical services is a contentious issue in modern policy. While some argue that healthcare should be an entirely free public service, others contend that individuals ought to bear the financial burden of their own treatments. I believe that although private funding can enhance service efficiency, a taxpayer-funded system is essential to ensure equitable access and social stability.

Advocates for universal, free healthcare maintain that medical attention is a basic human right rather than a luxury. When treatment is provided by the state, it eliminates the risk of individuals avoiding necessary care due to prohibitive costs, which often leads to more severe health crises later. For example, in countries with nationalised health services, preventative screenings and early interventions are common, as citizens are not deterred by price tags. This proactive approach not only improves public health outcomes but also reduces the long-term strain on emergency departments.

On the other hand, proponents of private payment models argue that such a system incentivises personal responsibility and fosters institutional competition. By requiring patients to contribute financially, clinics are pressured to improve their standards and reduce waiting times to attract customers. An illustration of this is the private healthcare sector in the United States, where investment in cutting-edge medical technology and specialised diagnostic equipment is often higher than in state-funded counterparts. Supporters suggest that this competition drives innovation and provides patients with more tailored treatment options.

In my view, while private systems offer certain benefits regarding efficiency and choice, they frequently leave vulnerable populations behind. A society is judged by how it protects its most disadvantaged members, making universal access a moral imperative. Therefore, governments should prioritise public funding to guarantee that essential medical services remain available to all, while potentially allowing private insurance to exist as a supplementary option for those seeking non-critical enhancements.
