Dissymmetry of Lift

In forward flight, a helicopter encounters dissymmetry of lift because the advancing blade moves faster relative to the surrounding air than the retreating blade. To this imbalance, modern rotor hubs allow blades to flap vertically. As the advancing blade flaps upward, its effective angle of attack , reducing lift. Conversely, the retreating blade flaps downward to lift, thereby maintaining aerodynamic equilibrium across the rotor .

Anti-Torque Systems

According to the laws of classical mechanics, spinning a main rotor produces an equal and opposite reactive torque on the fuselage. Without counteraction, the aircraft would spin uncontrollably in the 1 direction. Conventional designs employ a tail rotor mounted on a long boom to generate lateral 2. Alternatively, ducted fans or enclosed air thrusters can 3 this rotational force, improving safety by shielding exposed blades during low-altitude 4.

Principles of Autorotation

When an engine fails during flight, a helicopter can still land safely through a process known as autorotation. The pilot immediately lowers the collective control to reduce blade pitch, preventing a catastrophic loss of rotor 1. Upward airflow through the descending rotor now 2 the blades, acting like a windmill. Near the ground, the pilot increases pitch to convert stored kinetic energy into lift, ensuring a gentle and 3 touchdown.

Ground Resonance Phenomenon

Ground resonance is a destructive vibration phenomenon that can occur when an articulated rotor system interacts with landing gear on the ground. If a hard contact 1 the rotor blades from their symmetrical spacing, their centre of gravity shifts away from the rotational axis. This imbalance creates an oscillating force that matches the natural 2 of the airframe. Unless corrected by hydraulic dampers or instant takeoff, the violent shaking can completely 3 the aircraft structure.

Compound Helicopter Design

Traditional helicopters face fundamental speed limits because advancing blade tips approach sonic speeds while retreating blades risk stalling. To 1 these constraints, compound designs integrate auxiliary wings and forward propulsion systems. The additional wings generate aerodynamic lift during cruising flight, allowing rotor systems to offload stress and 2 at lower rotational speeds. Consequently, these hybrid configurations achieve greater operational range without 3 vertical takeoff and hovering capabilities.
