What does off topic mean in IELTS Writing Task 2?
Every Task 2 prompt has a topic (the broad area) and a question (the exact claim you must respond to, and how). Off topic rarely means writing about football when the prompt is about zoos. It usually means a sensible paragraph about zoos when the question was about something much narrower that zoos now do.
Some zoostopic now let visitors feed and touch the animalsthe question as part of the ticket pricenarrower. Is this a positive or negative developmentinstruction?
- → A paragraph on whether zoos should exist at all is about the topic. It answers nothing here.
- → The question is narrower: is letting visitors feed and touch the animals good or bad?
How the Task 2 descriptors describe your answer to the prompt (Task Response)
| Band | What the descriptor says (short quotes) |
|---|---|
| 9 | "The prompt is appropriately addressed and explored in depth." |
| 8 | "The prompt is appropriately and sufficiently addressed." |
| 7 | "The main parts of the prompt are appropriately addressed." |
| 6 | "The main parts of the prompt are addressed", though some may be covered more fully than others |
| 5 | "The main parts of the prompt are incompletely addressed"; "there may be irrelevant detail" |
| 4 | "the answer is tangential, possibly due to some misunderstanding of the prompt" |
| 3 | "No part of the prompt is adequately addressed" |
| 2 | "The content is barely related to the prompt." |
| 1 | "The content is wholly unrelated to the prompt." |

So a well-written paragraph about the general topic is not harmless filler. It uses words and time without addressing the prompt any further. Two of these can leave main parts of the question only partly answered, however good the grammar.

Questions
FAQ
What happens if you go off topic in IELTS Writing Task 2?+
Off-topic writing mainly lowers Task Response, because the descriptors rate how fully the prompt is addressed. Band 4 describes answers that are "tangential", band 2 content "barely related to the prompt" and band 1 content "wholly unrelated to the prompt". No fixed penalty is published.
Is going slightly off topic penalised in IELTS writing?+
A sentence of background is usually fine if it leads into the question. A whole paragraph about the general topic adds nothing to how fully the prompt is addressed, and two such paragraphs can leave main parts of the question only partly answered.
How do I avoid going off topic in IELTS Writing Task 2?+
Split the prompt into topic, narrowers and instruction, write the key terms in the margin, and put one in every topic sentence. After each paragraph, check which key term it is about and which part of the instruction it answers.
What are the key words in an IELTS Task 2 question?+
The words that narrow the topic (who, what, where, which change) and the instruction (for example, positive or negative, or do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages). The broad topic word alone is not a key term.
Does an off-topic essay get band 0 in IELTS?+
The descriptors reserve band 0 for non-attempts, answers not in English, or proof that an answer was totally memorised. Content wholly unrelated to the prompt is described at band 1 for Task Response.
Is it off topic to answer only one part of a two-part question?+
It leaves a main part of the prompt unaddressed. Band 5 describes main parts as "incompletely addressed", so give each part its own paragraph.
