IELTS Writing Task 2 band 8: the moves from 7 to 8, criterion by criterion

Band 7 writers often look for band 8 in rarer words and a better template. The descriptors point somewhere else: ideas that are more fully developed, lapses that become occasional rather than a few, and error-free sentences that become the majority.

What is the difference between band 7 and band 8 in Writing Task 2?

Put the band 7 and band 8 descriptors for Task 2 side by side and the gap is smaller than most learners expect. Band 8 does not add new skills. It asks for the band 7 skills done more fully and more consistently: the same four criteria, with the hedges ("a tendency to", "some", "a few") taken out.

Writing Task 2: band 7 vs band 8 (short quotes)

CriterionBand 7Band 8The move
Task Response"Main ideas are extended and supported" but with "a tendency to over-generalise""Ideas are relevant, well extended and supported."Develop each idea with a specific case and a limit
Coherence and Cohesion"A few lapses may occur"; devices used "with some inaccuracies or some over/under use""logically sequenced, and cohesion is well managed"; only "Occasional lapses"One idea per paragraph, every step following from the last
Lexical Resource"some ability to use less common and/or idiomatic items""A wide resource is fluently and flexibly used to convey precise meanings."Choose the precise word, not the rare one
Grammatical Range and Accuracy"error-free sentences are frequent"; "A few errors in grammar may persist""The majority of sentences are error-free"; errors are "non-systematic"Find your repeated error type and remove it

That last line matters. Each criterion is rated at the band whose positive features the script fully fits, and the task score is an average, so the fastest route up is usually your weakest criterion. Most band 7 essays miss band 8 on development (ideas stated but not pushed far enough) and on repeated small errors.

Three moves, then: develop each main idea further, tighten organisation so lapses become occasional, and clean your accuracy so that most sentences are error-free. None of them involves a memorised template. If you are still below 7, start with IELTS Writing 6.5 to 7; the full wording is in the Task 2 band descriptors.

FAQ

What is the difference between band 7 and band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2?+

The same four criteria, done more fully and consistently. Band 8 ideas are well extended rather than over-generalised, lapses in coherence are occasional rather than a few, vocabulary conveys precise meanings, and most sentences are error-free.

How do I get band 8 in IELTS Writing Task 2?+

No method guarantees a band. Work on your weakest criterion first, because the task score is the average of four equally weighted criteria. For most band 7 writers that means fuller development of each idea and removing one repeated error type.

Is there a band 8 structure or template for Task 2?+

There is no official structure. Clear paragraphs with one central idea each help coherence, but a memorised template does not: the band 4 Lexical Resource descriptor lists memorised phrases and formulaic language as inappropriate, and an answer proved to be totally memorised can be given band 0.

What vocabulary do I need for band 8 in Task 2?+

Precise vocabulary, not simply rare words. The band 8 descriptor asks for a wide resource used to convey precise meanings, with uncommon or idiomatic items used skilfully when appropriate.

How many grammar mistakes are allowed for band 8?+

The descriptors set no number. At band 8 the majority of sentences are error-free and remaining errors are occasional and non-systematic, so a mistake that repeats throughout the essay is the bigger problem.

Do I need to write more than 250 words for band 8?+

You must write at least 250 words. ielts.org says you are not penalised for writing more, but a very long answer may leave no time for checking, and some ideas may stop being directly relevant.
