PTE Reorder Paragraphs scoring: you're marked on pairs, so build pairs first

Most learners treat Reorder Paragraphs as a hunt for the right first sentence. The score ignores positions: it counts correct neighbouring pairs, so one box in the wrong place can cost you one pair, or three.

How PTE Reorder Paragraphs scoring works: pairs, not positions

In Reorder Paragraphs you get a set of jumbled text boxes and drag them into the order that makes a coherent text. Many learners assume each box is marked on its position: first box in slot one, second in slot two. It isn't. The marker looks at which box sits next to which.

Follow that rule through and you get two facts that change how you should work. First, the maximum is one less than the number of boxes: five boxes make four neighbouring pairs, so 4 points. Second, a box in the "right slot" earns nothing by itself. Only a correct link to the box before or after it scores.

Correct order A B C D E (4 pairs available). What different answers score

Your orderPairs that matchScoreBoxes in the right slot
A B C D EAB, BC, CD, DE4 / 45
B C D E A (wrong opener, chain intact)BC, CD, DE3 / 40
C D E A B (two blocks swapped)CD, DE, AB3 / 40
E A B C D (last box moved to the front)AB, BC, CD3 / 40
A B D E C (middle box moved to the end)AB, DE2 / 42
A C B D E (two middle neighbours swapped)DE1 / 43
E D C B A (reversed)none0 / 41

Worked from the Score Guide rule. Look at the last column: counting positions tells you almost nothing about the score.

What one misplaced box costs: 1, 2 or 3 pairs

Moving one box breaks the links at its old spot (one if it was at an end, two if it sat in the middle) and splits the pair where you drop it, unless you drop it at an end. So an end box moved to the other end costs 1 pair. A middle box dropped at an end costs 2, as does an end box dropped into the middle, such as swapping the first two boxes. A middle box dropped into the middle costs 3, and that includes swapping two middle neighbours.

The next sections turn this into a method: spot the words that tie two boxes together, rank those ties, and build outwards from your strongest pair. Our free Reorder Paragraphs practice sets mark one point per correct adjacent pair, the same way.

Questions

FAQ

How is PTE Reorder Paragraphs scored?+

You get 1 point for each correctly ordered adjacent pair of boxes, with a minimum of 0 (PTE Academic Score Guide, July 2025, p. 40). So five boxes are worth up to 4 points, and a box in the right position earns nothing unless its neighbour is right too.

Is there negative marking in Reorder Paragraphs?+

No points are deducted for wrong pairs; the Score Guides give a minimum score of 0. Always submit a complete order rather than leaving boxes unplaced.

If I get the first sentence wrong, do I lose all the marks?+

No. Only the pair involving the wrong opener is lost if the rest of the chain is intact. With five boxes, a wrong opener and an otherwise correct chain still scores 3 out of 4.

Is Reorder Paragraphs in PTE Core?+

Yes. The PTE Core Score Guide (January 2026, p. 35) lists 2–3 Reorder Paragraph items in the Reading part, scored per correct adjacent pair, exactly as in PTE Academic.

Which PTE skill does Reorder Paragraphs count towards?+

Reading only, in both PTE Academic and PTE Core, according to the Score Guides.
