What to include in PTE Summarize Spoken Text
Summarize Spoken Text is scored on five traits, but Content (0–4) carries the most points, and its descriptors keep returning to one skill: telling main ideas from detail. So "what do I include?" is really the task itself.
BandLadder's order of priority: secure each layer before the next
| Layer | What it is | Where you hear it | Words (Academic / Core) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Topic | What the talk is about, and whether the speaker explains, argues or challenges | The first 10–20 seconds | about 12 / 7 |
| 2. Main points | The two or three ideas the topic rests on | The middle, often flagged | about 38 / 13 |
| 3. Conclusion | The takeaway: implication, recommendation or verdict | The last 15 seconds | about 12 / 7 |
| Everything else | Examples, stories, figures, asides | Anywhere | 0, unless a main point needs it |
BandLadder advice: rough budgets that land mid-range, not rules.
Without the topic, your main points read as disconnected ideas, which the scale places at Content 1. Without the main points, you have named the subject, not summarised the talk. The conclusion is the layer learners most often lose: it arrives last, when the word count is already full. So priority also decides what you cut: details first; the conclusion is shortened, never deleted.

Questions
FAQ
What should I include in PTE Summarize Spoken Text?+
The topic and the speaker's purpose, the two or three main points, and the speaker's conclusion, in your own words. Pearson's Content scale rewards answers that identify all main ideas and remove extraneous detail.
How many words is PTE Summarize Spoken Text?+
In PTE Academic, 50–70 words earns full Form marks; 40–49 or 71–100 earns 1, and under 40 or over 100 earns 0. In PTE Core the range is 20–30 words.
How many sentences should a Summarize Spoken Text answer have?+
There is no set number. Unlike Summarize Written Text, which must be one sentence in PTE Academic (Score Guide, p. 33), several sentences are fine, but a response of only bullet points or very short sentences scores 0 for Form (p. 42). Three or four connected sentences usually fit 50–70 words.
Should I use a template for Summarize Spoken Text?+
Use a structure (topic, main points, conclusion), not memorised sentences. Pearson classifies responses built on pre-prepared or memorised material as irrelevant for Content, and a Content score of 0 means the item earns nothing.
What is the difference between Retell Lecture and Summarize Spoken Text?+
Both ask you to pick the main points of a talk. Retell Lecture is spoken in 40 seconds and scored for Speaking and Listening; Summarize Spoken Text is written in 50–70 words and scored for Listening and Writing.
How many Summarize Spoken Text questions are in PTE?+
PTE Academic has one Summarize Spoken Text item, and PTE Core has one or two, according to Pearson's score guides.
