PTE Academic can provide English evidence for Australian visa applications, but an overall score alone does not establish Competent, Proficient or Superior English. Check your visa subclass, test date and all four skill scores against the applicable Home Affairs table.

These are the PTE Academic minimums published for each English level. Every listed component must meet its threshold. The table does not replace your visa subclass's eligibility and evidence rules.

For a new test, “PTE 79 in every skill” is not the published Superior English target: Writing and Speaking require higher scores. Conversely, do not invent an additional overall minimum from an IELTS conversion chart. Use the exact evidence requirements for your route.
What if your test was on or before 6 August 2025?
The same official pages retain separate earlier-test tables. For PTE Academic, these list 50 in each skill for Competent, 65 in each for Proficient and 79 in each for Superior English. Do not apply these numbers to a test taken from 7 August 2025.
Home Affairs says older results may remain usable until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa and applicable validity rules. That outer date is not an automatic extension for every result or application. Check your subclass's required test-age period and the date against which it is measured. Try it: find the skill that misses the target
Original fictional example: a learner took PTE Academic in September 2026 and is checking the Superior English score thresholds. Their skills are Listening 72, Reading 74, Writing 84 and Speaking 89. They believe the strong Speaking result compensates for Writing. Does it?
Reveal the answer and the next practice step
No. Writing is one point below 85. The other three scores meet their published thresholds, but skill scores do not compensate for one another. The learner should verify their evidence requirements and focus the next diagnostic on Writing. This example only checks the table; it does not determine visa eligibility.

Possible outline: each skill has its own threshold; Writing84 is below85 even with Speaking89; review a fresh timed writing response to identify the underlying weakness before planning a retest. The outline is a practice aid, not an official or AI-generated test score.
Which test should you book, and what should you verify?
- Confirm the visa subclass first. Record the English level and accepted evidence required for your circumstances.
- Choose the correct product. The linked Home Affairs tables list PTE Academic. Do not substitute PTE Core because it shares the PTE name.
- Use an approved test-centre format. Home Affairs does not accept completely online, remotely proctored English tests for Australian visa purposes. Check the official test and format guidance.
- Check dates and documents. Allow time for preparation, available appointments, result delivery and a possible retest. Confirm the report submission process and validity rules.
- Check other receiving organisations separately. A university or professional regulator can have its own requirements. Visa acceptance does not settle those requirements.
Pearson describes PTE Academic as a two-hour, computer-based test, with results typically in two days. Typical timing is not a deadline guarantee. Pearson describes its scoring as combining AI with human expertise; do not choose the test on the assumption that no human review is involved.
How does English fit into skilled migration?
Home Affairs' SkillSelect guidance separates an Expression of Interest from an invitation and a visa application. English proficiency is one factor among others in points-based routes. It explicitly says meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation.
Use that official workflow and the relevant visa page for migration decisions. For English preparation, your useful next action is narrower: identify the required level, check the appropriate score table and diagnose the skills that need work.
Turn the four thresholds into a practice plan
Copy your confirmed Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking targets into a study note alongside your latest diagnostic results. A practice score is an estimate; use repeated timed work and feedback to spot consistent weaknesses rather than treating one mock result as proof of readiness.
- For Writing, review relevance, organisation, grammar and task completion on an original response. Change one weak feature and try a new prompt.
- For Speaking, practise clear delivery and meaning rather than relying on memorised scripts. Use the Retell Lecture audio exercise for a focused start.
- For Reading and Listening, keep an error log identifying whether the problem was meaning, spelling, attention or timing.
- Use the four-week PTE plan to organise sessions, then adjust the time allocated to each skill using your own results.
