IELTS and PTE Test Day ID Rules: The Mistake Is Usually a Valid Passport
Centres turn candidates away every session, and the reason is rarely a forgotten document. It's a valid passport that doesn't match the booking. Renew your passport between registering and sitting, arrive with the new one, and the number on it no longer matches the number on your application. That's enough to be refused entry, with the fee gone and no refund.
ID is the one test-day rule with no flexibility at all. It's also the easiest to satisfy, since two minutes of checking now removes the whole category of risk.
The Rule Behind Every Other Rule
Both IELTS and PTE require the same thing: the exact document you registered with, original, physical, and valid on test day. Name, date of birth and photograph must match your booking.
Not a different valid document. Not a photocopy. Not a photo on your phone. Not a renewed version of the same document with a new number. Digital IDs are not accepted for either test, whatever your country has moved to for other purposes.
A passport is the global default and the safest choice everywhere. Some countries permit a national identity card for regular IELTS sittings, but the exception is local and you have to confirm it with your own centre rather than assume it. For IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Online, a passport is required with no alternative. PTE publishes a country-specific exception list for candidates without a passport.
The Four Ways People Get Turned Away
Renewed passport, new number. The most common and the most avoidable. If you renew between booking and test day, contact the centre as soon as the new document arrives. Don't wait, and don't turn up hoping it'll be fine.
Expired, or currently at the passport office. An expired passport is refused, and a document under renewal is no document at all. If your passport expires before or near your test date, reschedule rather than attend. The transfer rules cost far less than a forfeited fee.
Name mismatch. Your booking name must match your ID letter for letter. Initials expanded, a middle name dropped, a spelling variant, any of these can stop you at the desk. This is why the name on your account matters at registration rather than at check-in.
Wrong document entirely. If you booked with a passport, a national ID or driving licence won't substitute on the day, even where national ID is locally permitted. The document has to be the one on the booking.
What to Actually Bring
Your original ID, and your booking confirmation. PTE accepts the confirmation printed or on your phone; for IELTS, check whether your centre wants a printed copy.
A transparent water bottle with the labels removed is permitted at IELTS. For paper-based IELTS you may bring pens, pencils, erasers and a sharpener, loose or in a clear case. Computer-delivered IELTS and PTE supply stationery for rough notes, so there's nothing to carry.
Everything else stays outside the room: phone, watch, wallet, bag, notes. Centres provide storage. A phone found on you during the test is a disqualification issue rather than a warning.
Arrive Earlier Than You Think
Check-in in 2026 involves biometric capture alongside document verification, and it takes longer than candidates expect, particularly at busy sessions. Late arrival can mean refused entry on its own, independent of your paperwork.
Treat the reporting time on your confirmation as a hard deadline rather than a suggestion, and add travel margin for a city you may not test in often.
Do This Today, Not the Night Before
Take out the document you registered with. Check three things: it hasn't expired and won't before your test date, the number matches your booking confirmation, and the name matches letter for letter.
If any of those fail, contact your test centre now. A correction made weeks out is administrative. The same problem discovered at the desk is a lost fee and a lost date, and neither IELTS nor PTE refunds a candidate refused entry for ID.
