IELTS Academic and PTE Academic can satisfy the English requirements for the five New Zealand master's programmes below, but the required scores are not identical. Four examples use IELTS 6.5 overall with every band at least 6.0, or PTE 58 overall with every communicative skill at least 50. Auckland's Master of Audiology has a higher requirement.

Auckland's entries use its published 2027 policy; the other entries use current course and admissions pages. Confirm the rules for your intended intake before booking a test.

University admission and student visa evidence are different
Start with your exact programme and offer conditions. Immigration New Zealand's Fee Paying Student Visa guidance says English test results are not mandatory evidence for that visa, though they can support the assessment of a genuine intention to study. It also requires the provider's offer declaration to confirm that it has assessed your English ability and academic capability for the course.
That does not remove a university's English requirement. It means there is no single IELTS or PTE number on that visa page that you can substitute for the university's conditions. Work and residence routes have their own rules and are outside this course directory.
How to read an English requirement
- Overall: compare the overall result printed on your official report.
- Each skill: check Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing separately. One higher skill does not cancel a lower one.
- Test version: this guide concerns Academic tests. Do not substitute PTE Core or IELTS General Training.
- Other conditions: academic qualifications, selection, delivery format, test validity and available places still need checking.
Five master's programmes and their published requirements
1. University of Auckland: Master of Engineering
IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall; each band at least 6.0.
PTE Academic: 58 overall; each communicative skill at least 50.
Matched the Master of Engineering programme to the postgraduate Engineering row in Auckland's 2027 English requirements, page 9. Research and academic entry conditions are separate.
2. University of Auckland: Master of Audiology
IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall; each band at least 7.0.
PTE Academic: 73 overall; each communicative skill at least 65.
This named programme has its own higher row in the same 2027 policy. See the Master of Audiology course and selection requirements. Meeting an English condition is not an assurance of professional registration or employment.
Auckland policy scope: the linked document applies to applications received from 1 August 2026 for Semester 1 2027 onwards. Test results must be within two years of the programme start, with the requirements met on one certificate. Check the policy and your offer for accepted formats or alternatives.
3. Massey University: Master of Business Studies
IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall; each band at least 6.0.
PTE: 58 overall; each communicative skill at least 50.
The MBS course page directs applicants to Massey's English standards. The numbers above come from its postgraduate, sub-doctoral row. Check your intended specialisation and whether you will study on campus or offshore online; those are distinct study arrangements.
4. Massey University: Master of Arts in English
IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall; each band at least 6.0.
PTE: 58 overall; each communicative skill at least 50.
The MA English page also points to the university English standards. The subject's academic and progression requirements still apply.
For both Massey entries, see the official international entry requirements. That page specifies two-year test validity and warns that some qualifications require higher results. Confirm any exception and the exact accepted test delivery format with admissions.
5. University of Canterbury: Master of Engineering Studies
IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall; each of the four skills at least 6.0.
PTE Academic: 58 overall; each communicative skill at least 50.
The MEngSt course page explicitly directs applicants to UC's postgraduate English requirements. Its English policy requires the standard in one sitting within two years of the expected start date. Use the postgraduate row, not the lower undergraduate row or the separate teaching-qualification requirements.

- Report A: PTE overall 61; Listening 59, Reading 57, Speaking 60, Writing 49. Does it meet the listed Canterbury MEngSt numerical minimums?
- Report B: PTE overall 74; Listening 70, Reading 69, Speaking 68, Writing 64. Does it meet the listed Auckland Audiology numerical minimums?
- Report C: IELTS overall 6.5; Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Speaking 6.5, Writing 5.5. Does it meet the listed Massey MBS numerical minimums?

A: Not yet. Writing 49 is one point below the required 50. The overall result does not compensate.
B: Not yet. Writing 64 is one point below 65. Overall 74 meets the 73 condition, but both conditions must be satisfied.
C: Not yet. Writing 5.5 is half a band below 6.0. The other bands do not remove that gap.
All three examples suggest inspecting Writing first. A numerical gap does not tell you how quickly improvement will happen. Review an actual response, identify the problem and revise it before attempting another timed task.

Make one line per programme with five targets: overall, Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Add the accepted test version, the evidence deadline and the official source. Use your existing official report if you have one; label any practice estimate clearly.

What if your result or evidence is different?
Can you use previous English-medium study? Some university policies describe alternatives to a new test. Ask admissions to assess the precise qualification and evidence you hold; a medium-of-instruction letter is not automatically a waiver.
Can you combine sittings or use an online test? Check the named institution's current rules before paying. An acceptance condition for one university or test version should not be carried over to another.
Does a score guarantee a place? No. These are English conditions within a larger application. Ask about course prerequisites, selection, intake availability and your offer's deadlines.
Before booking, send admissions your programme name, intended start date and proposed test version. Ask them to confirm the overall and individual skill minimums and when the result must remain valid. Keep their answer alongside the official course link and build your preparation plan around that confirmed target.
