Model answer

Band 8 model answer

Band 8252 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

If I had the opportunity, I would really love to give tandem paragliding a go, ideally somewhere in the French Alps, such as the area around Chamonix. I have seen countless travel documentaries featuring people launching themselves off steep ridges, and the combination of dramatic alpine scenery and pure flight just looks incredible.

In terms of preparation, because I would be flying with an experienced pilot, I would not need months of technical training beforehand. However, I would definitely need to build up some mental resilience, as running towards the edge of a mountain slope requires a fair bit of courage. Equipment-wise, you need a specialist wing, a comfortable harness, and a sturdy helmet. It is also essential to wear warm, windproof layers and rugged walking boots, because the temperature drops significantly at high altitudes, and the launch sites are quite rocky.

As for why I am so keen on this, I think it comes down to wanting a genuine adrenaline rush combined with a completely fresh perspective on nature. I have done a fair bit of hill walking and trekking over the years, but drifting silently above glaciers and snow-capped peaks would be on a totally different level.

I suppose it is also about pushing past my comfort zone. Being suspended thousands of feet in the air sounds terrifying at first, but I imagine the overwhelming sense of freedom and serenity once you are gliding makes it entirely worth the initial fear. It would certainly be an unforgettable milestone for me.
