Canada converts each skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark separately, so CLB 5 means reaching the minimum below in every skill you want counted at that level. Your weakest skill sets the level for programme eligibility.

CRS points for CLB 5
These are first-official-language points under the Comprehensive Ranking System. CLB 4 and CLB 5 earn the same points, so the step up matters only for programme eligibility.
Skill transferability points start at CLB 7 in all four skills, and Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 to apply at all.
Which Express Entry programmes CLB 5 meets
- Federal Skilled Worker: does not meet the minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills.
- Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1 job: does not meet the minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills.
- Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3 job: meets the minimum of CLB 5 in all four skills.
- Federal Skilled Trades: meets the minimum of CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing.
Each programme has other conditions too, such as work experience and education. Language is only one of them.

What IELTS score is CLB 5?
CLB 5 needs IELTS General Training listening 5.0, reading 4.0, writing 5.0 and speaking 5.0. Each skill is converted separately; the overall band does not count.
What PTE Core score is CLB 5?
PTE Core listening 39, reading 42, writing 51 and speaking 51. PTE Academic is not accepted for Express Entry; it must be PTE Core.
How many CRS points does CLB 5 give?
6 points per skill for a single applicant (24 for all four) or 6 per skill with a spouse or partner (24), before skill transferability points.
Is IELTS Academic or One Skill Retake accepted for Express Entry?
No. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. Results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply.
