CLB 8: IELTS, PTE Core and CELPIP scores
Canada converts each skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark separately, so CLB 8 means reaching the minimum below in every skill you want counted at that level. Your weakest skill sets the level for programme eligibility.

CRS points for CLB 8
These are first-official-language points under the Comprehensive Ranking System. Moving all four skills up from CLB 7 adds 24 points for a single applicant.
CLB 7 or higher in all four skills, with one under 9, also unlocks skill transferability points: 13 with a one-year post-secondary credential, 25 with a master's or two credentials including a three-year one, and 25 with three or more years of foreign work experience. Reaching CLB 9 in all four doubles these, which is why CLB 9 is the most common Express Entry target.
Which Express Entry programmes CLB 8 meets
- Federal Skilled Worker: meets the minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills.
- Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0 or 1 job: meets the minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills.
- Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2 or 3 job: meets the minimum of CLB 5 in all four skills.
- Federal Skilled Trades: meets the minimum of CLB 5 speaking and listening, CLB 4 reading and writing.
Each programme has other conditions too, such as work experience and education. Language is only one of them.

What IELTS score is CLB 8?
CLB 8 needs IELTS General Training listening 7.5, reading 6.5, writing 6.5 and speaking 6.5. Each skill is converted separately; the overall band does not count.
What PTE Core score is CLB 8?
PTE Core listening 71, reading 69, writing 79 and speaking 76. PTE Academic is not accepted for Express Entry; it must be PTE Core.
How many CRS points does CLB 8 give?
23 points per skill for a single applicant (92 for all four) or 22 per skill with a spouse or partner (88), before skill transferability points.
Is IELTS Academic or One Skill Retake accepted for Express Entry?
No. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English, and does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake. Results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply.
