What IELTS score do you need for the Australian National University?

The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) needs IELTS 7.0 with 6.0 in each band, PTE Academic 70 with 60 in each skill, TOEFL iBT 100 with 22 in each section, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 185.

The Master of Clinical Psychology and Master of Professional Psychology need IELTS 7.0 in every band, PTE Academic 70 with 65 in each skill, or TOEFL iBT 100 (reading 24, writing 27, listening 24, speaking 23). For these programs the per-band minimum can be met across two sittings within six months, under conditions the policy sets out. They do not accept One Skill Retake, IELTS UKVI, PTE UKVI, LanguageCert or the Michigan English Test.

IELTS Academic and IELTS UKVI Academic, including One Skill Retake, are accepted for undergraduate entry and most postgraduate coursework, but IELTS must be taken at a test centre. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is excluded, and a TOEFL taken on or after 21 January 2026 counts only as TOEFL iBT Australia on the 0–120 scale. PTE Academic Online is excluded. Duolingo does not appear in any ANU table.

A test counts if it was taken within two years of your application date, or four years if you have since completed a year of full-time education in English within the last two years. Results from different tests cannot be combined, and ANU states there are no waivers.

University of Canberra College Academic English 4 (Pass) is the English program ANU recognises for most postgraduate coursework entry. From 1 January 2027, admitted students take a post-entry language assessment that does not affect admission.

Requirements vary by course, and ANU can change them between intakes. Always confirm the score on your course page before you book a test. Your student visa has its own English rules, set by the Department of Home Affairs.
