Undergraduate: four tiers by college

ASU accepts TOEFL iBT taken in a test center, and the TOEFL iBT Home Edition for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 (Paper Edition not accepted). It accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI and IELTS Indicator, but not General Training. PTE is accepted at 53 for most majors, but ASU does not accept PTE Academic Online, and PTE is not accepted for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency are accepted (170 general).

Tests must be taken no more than two years before your ASU start date. You are automatically exempt as a US citizen or permanent resident, or a citizen of a country on ASU's English Speaking Country and Territory List; other exemptions (for example, a diploma from a school whose sole medium of instruction was English) need a form after you apply. ASU can also offer conditional admission if you meet academic requirements but not English. See ASU English proficiency.

Graduate: 6.5 IELTS or 60 PTE

ASU's general graduate requirement is TOEFL 80 (before 21 January 2026) or 4 (on or after), IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE 60 or Duolingo 105. Some programs have higher requirements or do not accept certain tests. The same test rules apply: IELTS Online and Indicator accepted, PTE Academic Online not accepted, TOEFL Home Edition only from 21 January 2026, and a two-year validity window measured to your start date.

Exemptions include citizenship of a country on ASU's English-speaking list, a bachelor's or higher from an institution where English was the only language of instruction (form plus evidence), a US bachelor's degree, or at least nine graduate credit hours with a 3.00 GPA at a qualifying institution. See ASU graduate English proficiency.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement ASU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the ASU English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
