Aston TOEFL test rules

Aston accepts TOEFL and TOEFL iBT, but the Home Edition is not accepted, and it says it does not accept online versions of listed tests unless specified. It accepts TOEFL only for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, not for programmes below degree level, including Foundation and pre-sessional programmes.

On the new scale, Aston lists 5 (reading 4.5, writing 4.5, listening 5, speaking 5) for BSc Biomedical Science and BSc Healthcare Science (Audiology), and 4.5 for Biomedicine, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Psychology and Pharmacology. Pharmacy, Optometry and Nursing applicants with a new-format test should contact admissions.

For comparison, the same page sets IELTS at 7.0 in every band for Aston Medical School and 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band for Engineering and Physical Sciences.

If your TOEFL score is below Aston's level

Aston runs pre-sessional English language programmes for applicants whose English falls short of its minimum entry requirements. Because TOEFL is not accepted below degree level, you would need a different test, such as an IELTS Academic test from a UKVI-approved centre, to join a stand-alone pre-sessional or Foundation year.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Aston programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
