How Auburn handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate scores must be sent directly from ETS. The undergraduate page gives TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale only. New TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 scale; our TOEFL new score scale guide explains it.

Graduate applicants can self-report at first, but applications are not considered until an official score arrives at the Graduate School. Auburn's ETS institution code is 1005. Some departments require higher scores, but every applicant must meet the minimums above.

Graduate teaching assistants can also show speaking skills through the speaking section of the iTEP, taken at Auburn before classes, and may be required to take a non-credit oral communication course.

For comparison, the undergraduate page and the graduate page both set IELTS at 6.5 overall, and the graduate page asks teaching assistants for IELTS speaking 7.

If your TOEFL score is below Auburn's level

Undergraduates can instead take the equivalent of English 1100 and 1120 (English Composition I and II) at an accredited US institution and earn a C or better in both. Graduate applicants with a degree from a regionally accredited US institution may not need a test, and other exemptions are decided case by case.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Auburn programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
