How Alabama handles TOEFL scores
Undergraduates send official scores to TOEFL code 1830. A TOEFL iBT writing score below 18 means you must take the Undergraduate Academic Writing course (ELC 111), and a speaking score below 18 means the Undergraduate Academic Speaking course (ELC 110), each alongside your degree courses and for three credit hours. For TOEFL Essentials, the thresholds are 8.5 in writing and 6.5 in speaking.
Graduate scores must be less than two years old when you apply. The Graduate School accepts superscores such as TOEFL MyBest, and official scores sent from the testing agency are only required after admission.
For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.0, and the graduate page at 6.5 with no subscore below 6.

If your TOEFL score is below Alabama's level
Undergraduates who do not meet the requirements may be eligible for the Pathway to UA programme. Graduate applicants are exempt if they hold a degree from, have studied for at least two years in, or are a citizen of a recognised English-speaking country.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Alabama programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
