BIMM standard minimum test scores
From BIMM's English language requirements page. BIMM says some courses ask for slightly higher scores and lists them on each course page. Tests must be no more than two years old at the course start date.
| Test | Undergraduate degrees | Postgraduate degrees |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0, 5.5 in each skill | 6.5, 5.5 in each skill |
| PTE Academic (not PTE Online) | 59, 59 in each skill | 62, 59 in each skill |
| Duolingo | 110, 100 in each component | 120, 100 in each component |
| TOEFL iBT or Home Edition | 72 (R18, W17, L17, S20); new scale 4 in each | 86 (R22, W21, L20, S23); new scale 4.5 in each |
| LanguageCert Academic | 65, 60 in each skill | 70, 60 in each skill |
Cert HE courses and degree waivers
Certificate of Higher Education courses are below degree level, so Student visa holders must take a SELT: IELTS for UKVI 6.0 with 5.5 in each band, LanguageCert Academic SELT at 60 in each section, or PTE Academic UKVI 59 in all four skills. BIMM says it cannot accept any other qualification for these courses.
For degree courses you need no test if you are a national of a majority English-speaking country as defined by the Home Office, or hold a UK bachelor's-level degree taught in English in one of those countries. BIMM may also consider an academic degree taught in English elsewhere, for example in India or Nigeria, if ECCTIS recognises it as equivalent to a UK bachelor's and you show it was taught in English.

Pre-sessional English and how to check
BIMM's pre-sessional English programme runs online over 6, 12 or 16 weeks depending on your current level, and says students can improve by 0.5 to 1.5 IELTS bands. Applications for it go through the Oxford International Digital Institute website.
BIMM also validates the MA courses at MetFilm School, which uses the same test table.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your BIMM course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where BIMM Music Institute (BIMM University) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
