How Binghamton handles TOEFL scores

Graduate admissions accepts the TOEFL iBT at a test centre, the Home Edition and the Paper Edition (no longer offered but still accepted), and accepts TOEFL iBT MyBest scores. Scores go electronically to the Office of Graduate Admissions, not to the department, using code 2535; ETS can take up to two weeks to deliver.

Undergraduates can submit the TOEFL iBT or iBT Home Edition, using code 2535. Only official scores sent by the testing organisation count, and all test scores must be less than two years old.

For comparison, the graduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 with no band below 5.0, and the undergraduate page gives an IELTS mid-50% range of 6.5 to 7.0.

If your TOEFL score is below Binghamton's level

Neither page describes conditional admission for a low TOEFL score. Graduate applicants may qualify for a waiver, for example after at least two years of full-time study at an accredited institution in a waiver-eligible country where English is the language of instruction. Undergraduates who studied for four years in English may request a waiver from international admissions.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Binghamton programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
