University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Birmingham City University?

Birmingham City University asks for IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for most courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Computer Science BSc, Big Data Analytics MSc and the International MBA. Some courses, such as Adult Nursing, ask for more. PTE Academic is 59 with 59 in each skill. BCU accepts IELTS Online and One Skill Retake, and runs its own online English Proficiency Test.

BCU's English levels by test

From BCU's accepted qualifications page. Results are valid for two years. PTE Academic Online and TOEFL Home Edition are not accepted for direct entry, and LanguageCert only as the SELT version. BCU lists PTE 59 for both its 6.0 and 6.5 levels, so confirm PTE for 6.5 courses with admissions.

The same page marks Duolingo and Oxford ELLT "Direct Entry: No", accepting them only for the online pre-sessional, yet BCU's India, Nigeria and Pakistan pages list Duolingo among accepted qualifications. The pages conflict, so check before relying on Duolingo.

Indian, Nepali and Nigerian school English

BCU accepts these school results. Indian boards not on its list, such as Haryana, Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and NIOS, are not mentioned, and its India page adds that some state boards may need an extra speaking and listening assessment. Nepal applicants with 80%, grade A or GPA 3.6 skip the listening and speaking test for IELTS 6.0 courses. School routes for Pakistan and Bangladesh, and medium of instruction letters, are not stated by BCU.

Pre-CAS interviews, deposits, pre-sessional and the Student visa

BCU's key dates page says it cannot accept undergraduate applications from applicants in Bangladesh; the Bangladesh country page does not mention this. Its CAS page puts applicants from Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Iran, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Sri Lanka through an automated pre-CAS interview. Applicants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Punjab and Haryana must pay the full tuition fee before a CAS, others 50%. BCU's next steps page mentions only 50%, so the pages differ.

BCU's pre-sessional courses for January 2027 degrees run online for 16 weeks (£6,000), 10 weeks (£3,570) or 6 weeks (£2,140), and on campus for 10 or 6 weeks. For a 6.0 (5.5) degree, entry is from IELTS 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5. On-campus courses need a SELT such as IELTS for UKVI.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your BCU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
