What the terms say
IDP's IELTS declaration, which candidates accept when booking a standard test, says the result cannot be used for UKVI application purposes and that you will not be eligible for a refund if you subsequently find you require an IELTS for UKVI result (IDP terms).
IDP India explains why: for most UK visa applications (apart from some types of student visa) the test must be taken at a centre authorised by UKVI and under UKVI conditions, and the TRF then shows the test met UKVI requirements (IDP India FAQ). See IELTS for UKVI vs IELTS Academic.
Your options
The refund is set by the normal policy for the test you booked, so timing matters.
| Provider (standard IELTS) | If you cancel | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IDP Australia | Full refund 14+ days before; 50% within 14 days but more than 7; none within 7 | IDP Australia |
| IDP India | Admin fee up to 25% if 15+ days before; no refund within 14 days | IDP India |
| Elsewhere | Depends on timing and local policy | ielts.org |

Before you cancel
Check whether you need IELTS for UKVI at all. Some UK student visa routes and universities accept a standard IELTS Academic result, as IDP India's wording suggests, and a university may accept it even if a visa route would not.
If you do need it, ask your centre whether it can change the booking before you cancel. No official page we read promises a switch from standard IELTS to IELTS for UKVI, so do not count on it. Detailed rules are set locally and can differ by country and test centre, so check your booking confirmation or ask your centre if anything here does not match what you were told.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a normal IELTS result for a UK visa?+
Not for most UK visa applications. IDP's terms say a standard result cannot be used for UKVI purposes; some student visas are an exception.
Do I get a refund if I booked the wrong IELTS test?+
Not because of the mistake. IDP's terms rule that out; only the normal cancellation refund applies.
Can I change my IELTS booking to IELTS for UKVI?+
Ask your centre. No official page we read guarantees it, so cancelling early under the refund rules may be the safer route.
Does IELTS for UKVI cost more?+
Often a little. Check the fee for your country before rebooking.
