Rules, comparisons and data

What ID do you need for IELTS for UKVI?

GOV.UK sets the rules. Your document must be current and valid, original, carry your photo and match your booking. A passport, convention travel document or stateless persons travel document works in and outside the UK. In the UK you can use an eVisa. EEA identity cards and other government photo ID cards work only in the country that issued them. Emergency travel documents are not accepted.

What the document must show

It must be current and valid, an original rather than a photocopy, include a photo of you and your name, and match the details you gave when booking. If it carries a signature, that is checked too. If you cannot prove your identity you will not be allowed to take the test (GOV.UK).

If the Home Office holds your passport and you have no other valid document, GOV.UK says to contact the Home Office to ask for it back. If you have a previous gender or name you do not want staff to see or your result to show, email sensitivebookings@homeoffice.gov.uk before booking.

After the test

Your IELTS for UKVI result carries a UKVI number, your SELT unique reference number. You quote it in your visa application; GOV.UK says the application may be refused without it. You do not submit result documents: the Home Office checks scores online, and results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded (GOV.UK).
