University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Brandeis University?

Brandeis University recommends graduate applicants score at least IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 5.0 on the new scale (100 on the old), Duolingo 130 or PTE Academic 68, and reviews scores holistically rather than as hard cut-offs. You can skip the test with a bachelor's of three full-time years taught only in English. Undergraduates submit TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge, with no published minimum.

Graduate figures are recommended scores, not hard minimums, and section minimums are not stated. Graduate scores are valid for up to two years and must still be valid when you submit the application.

Applicants who do not qualify for a waiver submit TOEFL (including the iBT Home Edition), IELTS (including IELTS Indicator and IELTS Online) or Duolingo, and the page also lists a PTE Academic recommendation of 68. Brandeis says its committee takes a holistic approach and encourages you to apply if you believe your English matches graduate study. Unofficial scores are fine for the application; official scores are needed only if you accept an offer. If your score expires before the program starts, send the official report before it expires. The TOEFL code is 3122. See graduate international applicants.

You can apply without a test if you completed an on-campus bachelor's with at least three full-time years where English was the only language of instruction, completed at least one full-time year of on-campus graduate study taught only in English, or worked full-time (35+ hours a week, after your bachelor's) in the US for two years within the last four. English-medium instruction should be shown on the institution's website, transcript or mark sheets, so Indian applicants from English-only colleges can use this route. Brandeis may still ask for more evidence.

The School of Business and Economics uses the same waivers and recommendations, considers TOEFL scores from a single test date only, and may ask applicants with lower scores to record a short video essay. See the business school FAQ.

Undergraduate: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge

First-year applicants whose native language is not English submit one of TOEFL iBT, IELTS, the Duolingo English Test or Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Brandeis does not publish a minimum score on the page. Scanned copies of TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge results are accepted, while Duolingo scores must come directly from the testing agency. If you spent four or more years at a high school where the full curriculum is in English, you can request a waiver in your DEISconnect portal after applying, and applicants coming straight from a United World College campus are exempt. See first-year applicants.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Brandeis sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Brandeis graduate international applicants page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
