Waivers

First-year students do not need a test if they attended and graduated from at least three years of high school in the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, Malta or a listed Caribbean country. Transfer students can also use the required English Freshman Composition class at a community college.

Graduate applicants do not need a test with a bachelor's degree from the same list of countries, and three years of high school there may also lead to a waiver. India, Nigeria and Pakistan are not on the list.

Costs and graduate admission

Undergraduate tuition and fees for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 are given as $22,100 a year on the four-year plan; international students pay $471 per unit on top of California resident tuition and fees. Graduate applicants need a 2.75 GPA in the last 60 semester units, and the GRE or GMAT is waived for the MS Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, MS Computer Science and MS Mathematics. The application fee on Cal State Apply is $70.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your CSUCI programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
