The rule
Appendix English Language EL 7.1 requires the qualification to be awarded by a body regulated by Ofqual, the SQA, Qualifications Wales or CCEA, following education in a UK-based school that began while you were under 18. EL 7.2 asks for the certificate or an official transcript from the awarding body.
| Application | GCSE or A level English accepted? |
|---|---|
| Skilled Worker visa (EL 2.3) | Yes |
| Student visa (EL 2.2) | Yes |
| Settlement under Settlement Family Life, Private Life, Long Residence and other routes in EL 2.4 | Yes |
| British citizenship | No, per gov.uk's citizenship English page |
Citizenship is different
Gov.uk's approved qualifications page says you cannot use GCSEs, A levels or NVQs for citizenship and settling, and ESOL qualifications only if they are on the approved SELT list. That page covers citizenship and settlement in general; for settlement routes listed in EL 2.4 the Immigration Rules accept EL 7.1 qualifications.
For naturalisation, the Form AN guidance lists only a B1 SELT, an English-taught degree (or UK postgraduate diploma), or majority English-speaking nationality.
