Can you copy and paste in PTE writing?

Yes, within your own answer. Pearson's task pages say Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text, plus PTE Core's Write Email and summaries, have Cut, Copy and Paste buttons and a word count below the response box. Use them to move or remove your own text. Copying wording from the prompt is a different matter: Pearson's content criteria reward your own words.

How they work

Pearson describes them like this. Cut: select text in your answer that you want to remove and left-click 'Cut'. Copy: select text you want to copy and left-click 'Copy'. Paste: place the cursor where you want the text and left-click 'Paste'.

Pearson's pages describe these buttons and the word counter as the tools in the writing box. They do not mention a spellchecker, and spelling is scored in Write Essay, both Summarize Spoken Text tasks and Write Email.

Copying from the prompt

Summarize Spoken Text and Describe Image give no credit for an 'unoriginal response': Pearson says you must use your own words (Listening page). For Write Essay, the content band of 1 describes communication limited to generic phrasing or repeating language from the prompt (Score Guide). For Summarize Written Text, Pearson says the best answers use words from the passage appropriately along with synonyms, but a string of excerpts without synthesis sits in the low content band.
