Other tests and exemptions

Undergraduates can also use SAT 560 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or ACT 42 in English and Reading combined. Canisius also accepts TOEFL iBT Paper Edition and TOEFL Essentials.

Undergraduates are exempt if they completed at least two years of study at a US or Canadian secondary school studying academic English, or if they are transfer students with two terms of English composition at C or better at an accredited US or Canadian college (except Quebec), excluding ESL and foundation classes. Native English speakers who are citizens of the listed exempt countries and were educated entirely in English may also be exempt. Canisius reserves the right to ask for a score anyway.

No ESL support, so plan your score

Canisius says it does not offer English as a second language support, which is why it requires proof of proficiency. Tests older than two years must be retaken. Letters of mode of instruction are not accepted as proof of English.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Canisius programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Canisius University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
