Graduate: six tests, departments may ask more
Unless exempt or waived, international applicants submit official scores from TOEFL iBT (79, including Home and Paper Editions, or 4.0 on the new 1–6 scale), TOEFL Essentials (8.5), IELTS or IELTS Indicator or One Skill Retake (6.5), PTE Academic or Academic Online (55), Cambridge C2 Proficiency or C1 Advanced (185) or Duolingo (120). MyBest TOEFL scores count at the same minimums. Scores must be dated within two years of when International Admissions reviews your application and sent by the testing agency, and you may retake a test before matriculation.
Automatic exemptions cover citizens educated in English from listed countries such as Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Nigeria, Singapore and the UK (India is not listed), some UB students changing programs, and certain transfers from US colleges. In rare cases a UB department, not the applicant, can petition for a waiver. UB's English Language Institute offers English study. See Graduate School requirements.

The minimums for undergraduate consideration are TOEFL iBT 70 or 4 (MyBest included), IELTS Academic 6.0, Duolingo 105, PTE Academic or Academic Online 50, ACT English and Reading 18 or SAT ERW 500, with IB, AP and British-curriculum English routes too. Scores must be less than two years old at admission; self-reported scores are fine for initial review.
You can be exempt as a native English speaker educated entirely in English who is a citizen of Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore or the UK, or through qualifying US college English courses. See undergraduate English proficiency.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University at Buffalo sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UB Graduate School page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
