What TOEFL score do you need for Carnegie Mellon University?

Undergraduates send scores to TOEFL code 2074; scores should be no more than two years old when you apply. If you take the TOEFL more than once, CMU uses the set of scores with the highest overall total and does not use MyBest. ECE also requires its minimums from a single test date and does not accept MyBest.

Heinz College accepts the TOEFL iBT, Special Home Edition and TOEFL Essentials (minimums 9 Reading, 10 Listening, 8 Speaking, 9 Writing) under DI code 2176. It recommends 25 per section on the older iBT, or 5.5 Listening and 5 elsewhere on the new scale, and uses your highest verified score in each section across up to four test dates.

For comparison, undergraduates need IELTS 7.5 overall, ECE needs IELTS 7 and Heinz sets IELTS at 6.5 overall.

Heinz College says applicants below its minimum should retake the exam before applying, and that CMU will not issue an I-20 to anyone with scores below the published minimums. None of these pages offers conditional admission or a pathway.
