CityU in Canada scores by level
From CityU in Canada's English proficiency requirements page. CityU's own placement measure is iTEP, and institutional versions of other tests are not accepted.
| Test | Graduate | Undergraduate |
|---|---|---|
| Academic IELTS | 6.5, no band below 6.0 | 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 87 | 76 |
| PTE | 61, no band below 61 | 51 |

| iTEP Academic Plus | 4.5 | 4.0 |
| CELPIP | 8 | 7 |
English-medium transcripts
If your official transcripts come from a school or program whose primary language of instruction was English, no further proof is needed. Where the registrar cannot verify the language of instruction, you submit official English transcripts plus a formal statement from the issuing school that English was the main language, or you meet the requirement by testing or transfer credit. The page names no country restriction, so an English-medium degree from India, Pakistan or Nigeria can qualify if the school confirms it.
Rare exceptions can be granted by the director of English Language Programs or the school dean, who has the final say.

Sending scores and how to check
Results must come directly from the test provider; scores you upload yourself are not official. Placement scores are valid for two years from the date of the result.
Requirements vary by program and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your CityU in Canada program page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test. Admission scores are separate from immigration rules: see IELTS for a Canada study permit and IELTS for the Canada PGWP.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where CityU in Canada publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
