What IRCC says
IRCC's help centre answer says Canada assesses everyone using the same standards, no matter their language of origin, nationality or ethnicity, and that you need third-party language results for all programmes under Express Entry. A second answer for the Canadian Experience Class says the same for people from English-speaking countries.
IRCC's Express Entry language test page lists the accepted English tests.
| English test | Version IRCC requires |
|---|---|
| PTE | PTE Core |
| CELPIP | CELPIP-General |
| IELTS | IELTS General Training (One Skill Retake not accepted for Express Entry) |
What a native speaker should still prepare for
Fluency is not the same as knowing the test format. PTE Core is a computer-based test of about two hours, taken at a test centre, with Speaking and Writing, Reading and Listening parts (Pearson). IRCC converts each skill into its own CLB level.
Native speakers usually aim for CLB 9 or 10 rather than the minimum, because those levels carry the most CRS points and unlock transferability points.
Need CLB 7+ for Express Entry?
IRCC accepts IELTS General Training and PTE Core, not IELTS Academic or PTE Academic. Practise the test you will actually sit, free.

Other routes and documents
Citizenship has its own language rules, covered in PTE Core for Canadian citizenship.
IRCC changes programme rules and score tables from time to time. Check the linked canada.ca page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not immigration advice.
