Does my accent affect my PTE score?

Not in itself. Pearson says PTE does not discriminate against accents and its scoring engine is trained on speech from over 90 language groups. What is scored is pronunciation: whether vowels, consonants and stress are clear enough for regular speakers to understand. A strong accent only costs points where it makes words hard to follow.

What Pearson says

In its help centre, Pearson answers "no" to whether PTE tests discriminate against some accents. It says the engine is trained to recognise speech from over 90 language groups, and that computer scoring reduces bias against any particular accent (Pearson help centre).

The Score Guide says the scoring engines were trained on a field test of more than 10,000 test takers from 158 countries with 126 first languages (Score Guide). Pronunciation and oral fluency are scored by AI only; content in some tasks is also checked by a human.

Where accent does show up: the pronunciation scale

Pronunciation is rated from 0 to 5. The scale mentions accent only where it affects understanding (Score Guide). Our summary of the levels:

ScorePearson labelSummary
5Highly proficientAll sounds easily understood; stress fully appropriate
4AdvancedA few minor distortions that do not affect intelligibility
3GoodMost sounds correct; a few words may be unclear
2IntermediateAt least two-thirds intelligible; listeners may need to adjust to the accent
1IntrusiveStrong intrusive accent; listeners may miss about a third of words

What to work on instead of your accent

Aim for clear vowels and consonants, correct word stress and smooth phrasing, not a British or American sound. Oral fluency is scored separately on rhythm, hesitations, repetitions and pauses. This is our advice, based on the published scales.
