What is the Duolingo English Test pattern?

The Duolingo English Test is a computer-adaptive test taken online in about one hour: 5 minutes of setup and ID checks, about 45 minutes of scored questions, then 10 minutes of writing and speaking samples. It uses 13 question types, from Read and Select to Interactive Speaking, and the number of questions varies with how confident the test is in your score.

How the test is set up

Duolingo's applicants page describes a 1-hour process: setup and ID verification (5 minutes), the scored assessment (45 minutes) and writing and speaking samples (10 minutes). The test structure article says you check your camera, speakers and microphone, submit government photo ID, set up your phone camera to record your computer and review the rules first.

The test is adaptive: some questions get harder or easier based on your answers, and the number of questions changes according to the grading engine's confidence in your score. Questions come from a very large pool, so repeats are unlikely (DET help centre).

Question types, frequency and timing

Frequencies are from the test structure article and the time limits from each question type's article in the DET help centre, read on 14 October 2026.

What the newer tasks involve

In Interactive Speaking you hold a simulated conversation with an animated character, hearing 6 to 8 questions once each and getting 35 seconds to answer each (DET help centre). Interactive Writing gives you 5 minutes on a prompt, then 3 minutes on a follow-up based on what you wrote (DET help centre).

Interactive Reading sets a passage with Complete the Sentences, Complete the Passage, Highlight the Answer, Identify the Idea and Title the Passage (DET help centre). Interactive Listening has Listen and Complete, Listen and Respond, then Summarize the Conversation; you can replay the scenario audio in Listen and Complete as often as you like (DET help centre). In Listen and Type you can play each clip three times in total (DET help centre).

Scoring and the samples

Questions with correct answers are marked automatically, with partial credit, and you are not penalised more for a wrong answer than for skipping (DET help centre). The Writing Sample and Speaking Sample are shared with the institutions that receive your results (DET help centre). Results arrive in two days (DET).
