What happens if the Duolingo English Test freezes, crashes or won't upload?

Freezing, mid-test cancellations and failed uploads are usually caused by a weak internet connection, and you must take the whole test again. Quitting uses up an attempt that cannot be restored, and a session time-out uses one too. If a technical issue stopped your test uploading, Duolingo says you can usually retake without paying.

Internet and computer checks

Duolingo asks for at least 2 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload and recommends a wired ethernet connection rather than Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot (help centre). Close every program other than the test app, including browsers, calling, messaging and remote-desktop software, and do not use a VPN or virtual machine (rules, programs).

Once the test starts uploading, do not open other programs or windows and do not exit the app; depending on your speed, uploading can take several minutes (help centre).

Getting help

If you have not received an email about a technical issue, contact support (help centre). For a refund question, contact support within 24 hours of the problem; you are not eligible for a refund if you broke the test rules (help centre).

You cannot appeal a result that could not be certified because of a technical issue; you need to take the test again (help centre). Each credit has three attempts and expires 21 days after purchase; see Duolingo test credit expiry. Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page before you book or pay.
