How Duquesne handles TOEFL scores

The graduate pages ask for scores current to within one year. Some programmes also set higher sub-scores in Reading, Writing, Speaking or Listening. The TOEFL institution code is 2196.

Teaching assistants whose first language is not English take further language tests run by the Global English Institute and the Center for Teaching Excellence. The catalog says teaching assistants with a TOEFL iBT speaking sub-score of 27 or higher are excused from the SPEAK test, and the admissions page adds that graduate assistantships need greater proficiency than the general minimums.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

For comparison, the English proficiency page sets IELTS at 6.0 for undergraduates and 6.5 for graduate admission.

If your TOEFL score is below Duquesne's level

Undergraduates without a qualifying score can take placement tests on arrival and may be placed in part-time study with English support or in one or more semesters of ESL study. Graduate applicants below their programme's level may be considered for the Pathway Program for International Graduate Students, which allows up to twelve months of Global English Institute study and academic coursework; it carries additional cost.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Duquesne programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
