Graduate: IELTS 6.5, scores within one year

Graduate applicants whose native or primary language is not English must send scores. The general minimums are TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 and Duolingo 115, and some programs set higher totals or section minimums; the admissions page gives Palumbo-Donahue as TOEFL 90, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 125. The catalogue says requirements range from 80 to 100 on TOEFL and 6.5 to 9 on IELTS by department. Duquesne treats scores current to within one year as reliable. TOEFL code is 2196. See English proficiency requirements and the graduate catalogue.

You may be exempt after four years of undergraduate or two years of graduate study taught in English at an accredited US institution. For study outside the US you need an approved petition showing four years of undergraduate work, or two years of graduate coursework, taught in English at an accredited institution, so a four-year English-medium bachelor's from India can be petitioned but a three-year degree alone does not meet that four-year rule. If your scores fall short, the Graduate Pathway Program gives conditional admission: up to 12 months of Global English Institute classes and academic coursework at extra cost, with dismissal if you do not progress.

Undergraduate: scores optional, IELTS 6.0 for direct entry

Undergraduate admission is based on your academic record, and English scores are strongly encouraged but not required. You can send a score, request a waiver for four years of secondary study taught in English at an accredited institution, or take placement tests on arrival. TOEFL 70, IELTS 6.0, Duolingo 105, PTE Academic 48 or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 540 lets you start full-time study; Duolingo, PTE and SAT count only for some programs. Without approved scores you take Accuplacer and a writing sample on campus, and ESL courses cost extra. See English proficiency requirements.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Duquesne University sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Duquesne English proficiency requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Duquesne University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
