Validity, waivers and applying without a score

For the Bachelor, the result must be under two years old when you enter the programme. For the MSc&T, it must be under two years old at the application deadline. Upload a copy of your results in the application system and do not send MSc&T scores electronically through ETS or the British Council.

The MSc&T page lets you submit your application without a test result, but any offer is then conditional on providing a result at the required level. It waives the test only if English is your native language (passport or national ID needed) or your last degree was taught entirely in English, with the degree certificate or transcript stating the language of the programme.

The Bachelor FAQ lists IELTS, TOEFL iBT and the Cambridge Advanced and Proficiency tests as accepted, and the MSc&T page adds Cambridge First. Neither page mentions PTE or Duolingo.

French, entry points and checking your score

No French is needed to apply to either route. A Bachelor student below French B2 takes French classes during the programme, because B2 is a graduation prerequisite. For the MSc&T, no level of French is required for admission, but students who have not studied in French are tested on arrival and may be placed in an introductory course at no extra fee.

The Bachelor takes applications for Year 1 only and sets no minimum grades to apply, while the MSc&T accepts candidates for the first or second year of a master's.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your École Polytechnique programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where École Polytechnique publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
