Exemptions, validity and deadlines
You need no English certificate if you hold the Swiss Matura, a bachelor's from ETH Zurich or EPF Lausanne, or a bachelor's taught completely in English. The language of instruction must be confirmed by your university's central administration (for example the Registrar's Office), unless your bachelor's is from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA. Confirmations from teachers or professors are not accepted.
TOEFL, IELTS and C1 Advanced certificates must be no more than two years old; C2 Proficiency and C1 Advanced with grade A (200-210) may be up to five years old.
The certificate must be submitted by the application deadline. Applications with an invalid, insufficient or missing certificate are rejected on formal grounds, and ETH says you cannot submit a certificate after the deadline, so take a test if you are unsure whether your degree qualifies.

ETH's bachelor's language requirements say the main teaching language is German, and applicants with a non-Swiss matriculation certificate may need a German C1 certificate, submitted by 31 March. ETH does not state an English test score for bachelor's admission.
ETH Zurich's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student residence permit or visa. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ETH Zurich programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
